The hospital is a 70-bed hospital and offers a range of general and specialist inpatient and outpatient services including emergency, general medicine and surgery, basic orthopaedic, clinical investigation, obstetrics, maternity, gynaecology, high dependency and coronary care, palliative care, medical imaging, pathology and paediatrics. Additional services include Mental Health, Alcohol and other Drugs Service, oral health, physiotherapy, dietetics, speech pathology and outreach/community-based facilities, as well as a Primary Health Care Centre. Another private hospital is adjacent to the facility and operates within a co-location agreement.
The hospital has approximately 282 full time equivalent staff delivering services across acute, community and primary care. Approximately 500 babies are born at the Gladstone Hospital each year and approximately 1600 surgical cases performed in the two operating theatres. There is a 29-bed mixed GeneralSurgical and Medical Ward and a four-bed High Dependency Unit where patients may be held pending retrieval, or for close observation not possible on the wards. Additional beds are available for paediatrics. The hospital has a busy surgical outpatient clinic reviewing a wide variety of surgical conditions.
The Staff Specialist positions at the hospital are supported by a team of Senior and Junior Medical Officers. These positions support the Emergency Department and inpatient units providing anaesthetic and obstetric services as well as general inpatient services. The hospital also has full-time specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medicine, Surgery and Paediatrics.
The Staff Specialists and Senior Medical Officers report to the Executive Director of Medical Services. Junior Medical staff, although reporting to the Executive Director of Medical Services also report on clinical matters to the Staff Specialist or Senior Medical Officer who may be supervising the area the junior medical officers are working. The position may require successful applicants to undertake continuous shift work and to work all shifts in accordance with the unit roster.
Role Info

• Actively participate in the Performance Appraisal and Development (PAD) process and engage in continuous learning and workplace improvement and innovation.
• Understand your broad responsibility for safety and quality in healthcare, actively participate in continuous quality and safety improvement activities within the workplace and notify a relevant clinical or non-clinical responsible officer when concerns exist about workplace or patient safety.
• The provision of a healthy and safe environment within the health service is everyone’s responsibility.
• Carry out work in accordance with prescribed practices and procedures and in a manner, that will not create health and safety hazards for yourself or others in the workplace.
Clinical Functions
• Under the direction of Senior Medical Staff:
o Manage patients to ensure that problems are fully assessed and identified;
o Plan comprehensive clinical care and management;
o Supervise the appropriate election and arrangement of investigations.
• Maintain appropriate comprehensive and concise clinical documentation, including: observations, opinions, diagnoses, other data and procedures undertaken.
• Maintain appropriate summary documentation, particularly when the patient is transferred, including discharge summaries and letters.
• In consultation with senior medical staff, ensure that patient flow is optimised and compliance targets (NEAT) are met.
• Ensure and review the quality of patient care by participation in clinical audits and quality programs.
• Execute any other clinical duties relevant to the position as required, e.g. Attend the medical MDT Huddle meeting.
Team work and Communication
• Supervise the day to day activities of junior medical staff to ensure that appropriate standards of care are maintained, and that junior medical staff are trained to adequately fulfil their duties.
• Participate in the provision of a shift roster to provide services on weekends, as directed by the Senior Medical Staff.
• Be aware of and adhere to all relevant hospital policies and procedures.
Education and Research
• Participate in clinical meetings, continual professional improvement and medical education.
• Participate in the education of patients and their relatives.
• Assist in the teaching responsibilities of the unit in respect of Junior Medical, medical students and other staff.
Mandatory qualifications / Professional registration / Other requirements
• Mandatory qualification/s: MBBS or equivalent eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
• Non-mandatory qualifications/requirements: Current AHPRA registration and a minimum of two years practice within the Australian healthcare system.
• Proof of identify documents: Candidates must provide certified copies of requested proof of identify documents for the purposes of General Criminal History and National Police Certificate checks.
• Shift work: Appointees will be required to work all shifts in accordance with the unit roster.
• Licence to operate vehicle: This position requires the incumbent to operate a class C motor vehicle and an appropriate licence endorsement to operate this vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
• Travel: Travel throughout the health service may be required as part of this position.
• Proof of identify documents: Candidates must provide certified copies of requested proof of identify documents for the purposes of General Criminal History and National Police Certificate checks
